the big G
Recently launched is the BBC backstage area at backstage.bbc.co.uk. It’s a place where the BBC are making code available for the open source community to develop and also for regular people on the street to make suggestions of ideas for development. As a result there is alot of applications/services that people are building that actually work. Here are a few that are using code from Google Maps and feeds from BBC News to create a variety of useful tools.
Ever wanted to check on the cameras that cover out great capital to see how the traffic is flowing? Well now you can! Using the Google API they’ve plotted the locations of all the cameras on the map and you can select your area and then view the feed/image.
Once you’ve done that you might want to know whether there are any traffic jams on the way home. Surprisingly you can do this too! Check out your area and use the different icons to see what sort of traffic snarl up you’ll encounter on your way home.
Finally if you want to check whether there has been any major news story in your area or if you don’t know the geographical location of a news item you can now see where the news is appearing on the map.
The sky is the limit on this one. What would you plot on a Google Map?
